About the Artists

Wrapping up the 2021 season for MOTHS will feature a group of some of the best jazz musicians from Portland. The group will be centered around the rhythm section of Tom Grant (piano and vocals), Ron Steen (drums), and Dave Captein (bass). Added to the dynamic trio will be a female vocalist (to be named later) along with allstar horn players.

TOM GRANT, master instrumentalist, talented singer and natural entertainer nimbly walks the line between jazz tradition and modern pop. This soft-spoken Oregon native’s inspired songwriting produces propulsive R&B grooves, infectious melodic hooks, and stylish ballads with equal ease. He plays jazz piano with the harmonic sophistication and deep sense of swing that only comes from more than four decades on the bandstand. As one of the Pacific Northwest’s most renowned musical artists, Tom Grant’s career achievements reflect his unique ability to embrace the full spectrum of contemporary music. In the 80’s and 90’s Tom was considered by many to be the father of the Smooth Jazz sound, recording albums on major labels including Verve, Shanachie and Windham Hill. Several of these shot to number one on the Smooth Jazz charts.

RON STEEN, veteran bandleader, drummer, and one of the Northwest’s top rhythm keepers, as well as a leader of the Portland jazz scene. He is also the Godfather of Jazz Jams in Portland, having hosted ongoing jam sessions since 1980, including the famed jam at Produce Row. Notable international jazz stars who come through town stop in to Steen’s jams for impromptu music, led by one of the best in the business. In addition to hosting five jam sessions, Steen is also a sought after bandleader and session musician, who his peers hold in high regard for his solid and versatile rhythms and his engaging personality. Steen’s ability to bring together the top musicians in two and around the nation makes him one of the city’s most valuable assets.

DAVE CAPTEIN, an accomplished performer on both string bass and bass guitar, having worked as a professional musician for over 35 years in the Pacific Northwest. A Portland native, he has worked with many well-known jazz artists. He freelances in the Portland area, and is a very active member of the music community, frequently appearing in the city’s many clubs and concert venues, as well as recording studios. He is a favorite choice for the region’s many bandleaders and always in demand for his solid sound, time and feel, as well as his soloing abilities.
